M.J. Rose’s The Hypnotist and Hothouse Flower by Margot Berwin. (Titles link to personal reviews for each of the books).

Both are great - one for fun (Hothouse Flower), the other for thrills (The Hypnotist). Each set in reality with a foot in the speculative, my favorite kind of read.
